Maintaining the original finish and vibrant colors of your church mural wallpaper ensures it continues to inspire and beautify your sacred space for years to come. While care and maintenance instructions share common elements across different wallpaper materials, some specific practices vary. This guide provides a generic care routine applicable to all types of wallpapers and then delves into material-specific care instructions.
General Care Instructions (Applicable to All Wallpaper Types)
Regular Cleaning: For ordinary dirt and spots, gently clean the wallpaper using a mild soap mixed with warm water. Start from the bottom and move upward to protect the baseboard and prevent streaking.
Rinsing: After washing, rinse the wallpaper thoroughly with clean water from top to bottom. Use a soft sponge for rinsing.
Drying: Blot the wallpaper dry with a soft, lint-free towel to prevent water damage and ensure a streak-free finish.
Stain Removal: For tougher, surface-level stains, a stronger detergent may be needed. Test the detergent on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to larger sections.
Material-Specific Care Instructions
Prepasted Wallpaper
Avoid abrasive cleaners and solvent-based cleaning agents such as lacquer thinners, nail polish remover, or pine oil, as they can damage the print and finish.
Annually, apply a thin layer of water-based polyurethane to extend the wallpaper’s life and protect its surface. This is especially recommended for wallpapers in high-traffic areas.
Peel & Stick Wallpaper
Clean gently with a damp sponge and mild soap. Ensure all soap residue is removed to avoid discoloration.
Do not use liquids, especially those containing bleach, solvents, or thinners, as they may cause discoloration or ink removal.
Paste-the-Wall Wallpaper
Similar to Prepasted Wallpaper in terms of cleaning and maintenance. Additionally, cleaning agents containing bleach may be safely used without damaging the wallpaper.
As with Prepasted Wallpaper, an annual application of water-based polyurethane is recommended to protect and extend the life of the wallpaper.
Additional Tips
Avoid Abrasives: Regardless of the wallpaper type, never use abrasive cleaners or tools that could scratch or damage the wallpaper’s surface.
Protect During Cleaning: When using water or cleaning solutions, be cautious not to soak the wallpaper excessively, and always protect the flooring and adjacent areas from drips or spills.
Preventive Care: Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth can prevent dust accumulation and reduce the need for wet cleaning.
By following these care and maintenance tips tailored to your church’s wallpaper material, you can preserve the beauty and integrity of your mural, ensuring it remains a source of inspiration for your community for many years.
